amanasalto is now presenting 10 carefully selected prints from one of Tomatsu's most important photograph series "Pencil of the Sun".

In 1970s, Tomatsu chose to present this series with "black prints" (high contrast gelatin silver prints), even though he was aware that the details of the dark areas would disappear. 
In his later years, Tomatsu tried to take a different approach to draw out the atmosphere hidden in the dark areas, by paying more attention to the middle tones of the print.

The series, this time, is made possible by the help of Tomatsu's wife, Mrs. Yasuko Tomatsu, who has been Tomatsu's printer over the ages. Expressing the depth of blackness and rich grayscale tones with high durability platinum prints, we hope to carry on his will for the series.
